She is in her early 40's and has always had lots of hair. It is so thin at the back that it's a waste of money to go to the hairdresser even for a trim. It is really worrying her. She has tried lots of shampoos and different hair repair/proteins and nothing seems to work. Can any hairdressers out there/ doctors offer any advice?

i'm not a hairdresser but i do come from a family of women with really thick hair. my sister and myself have really long hair. hers use to be so thick that she had to use large bands to hold it. lately her hair is getting very very thin. she thinks it's because she has been going thru a lot of stress. not only the stress itself but it causes her to eat unhealthy. you hair and nails will suffer if your diet is not a healthy one. good luck to her and tell her to see her doc.

I am not a doctor, but I am a nurse. She is at a age where she needs alot of calcium . It could be that she just needs good vitamins. It would really help if I knew if she was taking any medications. Methadone for instance will suck all the calcium out of your body and women lost hair and teeth on this medication. If vitamins do not work I would advise her to see a doctor, because this could be a health issue. This is not medical advice only friendly advice. I would even suggest prenatal vitamins, you take while pregnant, they are great for growing strong and long hair and nails.

Stress and dieting could cause loss and thinning of hair. As well as age. She needs to see a dermatologist to be sure. I have an aunt who always had thick long pretty black hair. It started thinning out in her mid 30's. She had to go to a dermatologist, then a licensed beautician who nursed it back to health. Worked for her.

It is easier to prevent the falling out of healthy hairs than to regrow hair in follicles that are already dormant. Finasteride (marketed in the U.S. as Propecia) and minoxidil (marketed in the U.S. as Rogaine, and some places as Regaine) have shown some success in partially reversing loss. In a one one-year study of finasteride, evaluation after one year showed five of 21 subjects (23.8%) had two-grade improvement in MNHS grade on a modified Norwood/Hamilton scale and 12 of 21 subjects (57.1%) had one-grade improvement; the others remained at the same grade.[6] However such treatments are generally ineffective at treating extreme cases of hair loss.[7]
